2 Commander s Guide A COMMANDER S GUIDE IN TRAINING TODAY S CHAYOLIM Introduction Hey Chayol! Does it occur to you that you play a very important role in this world? Do you realize how remarkable it is to be part of Hashem s army? Do ever stop for a moment and think about the unique qualities Hashem gifted you with and how you can use them? What happens when you reflect on all these things? Do you start to feel important? Does it make you feel very proud of yourself? Without realizing, does thinking about these things wake up your ego and convince you that you are better than other people? It is true that you are special. It is true that you play an extremely important role in creation. And it is true that Hashem gifted you with unique talents. However, if these things make us feel big and better than others, then we can be sure the feelings are coming from our Yetzer Hora. So what is the proper attitude to have regarding our abilities and our special role? The Yom Tov of Pesach will teach us how to determine if these thoughts are coming from the Yetzer Hora, or if they are indeed good. פרשת משפטים פרק כ ג פסוק ט ו "א ת ח ג ה מ צ ות ת ש מ ר You shall observe the festival of matzos. Torah Chumash The Torah calls the Yom Tov of Pesach Chag Hamatzos the Yom Tov of the Matzos, because on Pesach we are commanded to get rid of all chometz and eat only matza.. 2
3 The characteristics of chometz and matza, in most ways, are opposite of eachother. The difference between them teaches us a very important lesson. The dough of chometz rises it inflates itself so it appears bigger than its original size. Matza, on the other hand, is kept under watch to ensure that it does not rise it does not inflate itself, rather it remains flat. Chometz represents ga ava, the tendency to feel smarter, better, and more talented than others. Matza, though, symbolizes humility and the tendency to feel small and humble near others. Rebbe The Torah calls Pesach Chag Hamatzos to show us that the most vital lesson that Pesach teaches us is that we should identify with the characteristics of matza, and behave accordingly. We should work on ourselves to feel small and humble. We should find good things in other people that humble us and when the Yetzer Hora tries to put other down to inflate our own ego and self-worth, we must tell him clearly we are like matza and don t feel better than others. At the Seder, we say two brachos on our matza. We say Hamotzi and then we add Al achilas matza. we add to the general brocha for bread a specific one for matza to emphasize that our bread on Pesach is matza and represents bitul. When we act with humility, then this ensures that we have zman cheruseinu, a time of freedom from all worries. The lesson of Chag Hamatzos is not just for Pesach, rather it applies every day of the year. We are commanded to remember Yetzias Mitzrayim every day, and not just remember, but feel as though we are actually leaving Mitzrayim today. Therefore, the lesson from matza applies in every moment; we always must act with humility. Lesson The lesson of matza applies especially to children in Tzivos Hashem, because every child in Hashem s army has a huge responsibility and zechus that comes along with being in this army. It may happen that when a child thinks about the talents and qualities he possesses, he ll 3
4 begin to feel too proud of himself. Therefore, we have to carefully watch ourselves from feelings of ga ava. The real test to know if we re being honest and humble about our talents is if we put them to use in the service of Hashem. This shows that we recognize that they are given to us by Hashem and therefore don t make us any more special than other people. Knowing that we re lucky enough to be in Hashem s army should empower us to do the right thing and shouldn t chas visholom make us feel more important than others. B chein So chayolim, yes, we are special! We are in the greatest army in the world, with the ultimate Commander-in-Chief! Every chayol must recognize his/her qualities and abilities, but at the same time watch out for the Yetzer Hora. He ll try to make us feel big and inflated like chometz, but we must behave like matza and use our talents to fulfill Hashem s commands all while remaining small and humble in our own eyes. 4
